Former Trump deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates has been sentenced to 45 days in jail, plus three years probation and a fine of $20,000. In February 2018, Gates pled guilty in federal court to two counts including conspiracy against the United States and making false statements to federal authorities. Sentencing was put on hold as Gates cooperated with the Mueller investigation and authorities. The New York Times writes:

Mr. Gates testified in two major trials that sprang from Mr. Mueller’s inquiry: the case against Paul Manafort, Mr. Trump’s former campaign chairman who is now serving a prison term of more than seven years for tax fraud, bank fraud and other crimes, and the prosecution of Roger J. Stone Jr., Mr. Trump’s longtime friend who is awaiting sentencing on a conviction of lying to Congress.

Prosecutors remarked that “Gates has worked earnestly to provide the government with everything it has asked of him” and due to his “extraordinary assistance,” they were not opposed to probation.

The AP says, “Gates is one of a half-dozen associates of President Donald Trump charged in Mueller’s investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.”

Gates was among the first defendants charged in Mueller’s investigation. An indictment accused him and Paul Manafort, his onetime mentor and the chairman of the 2016 Trump campaign, of failing to disclose the work they did for then-Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych and of hiding their proceeds from U.S. tax authorities to fund lavish lifestyles and pay for personal expenses.

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn is set to be sentenced next month. A judge rejected an appeal from his attorney’s on Monday.
