Rick Perry once described Donald Trump as a “cancer on conservatism.” How times have changed. Now the outgoing Energy Secretary believes the president is “the chosen one.” During an interview on Fox News he said:

“God’s used imperfect people all through history. King David wasn’t perfect. Saul wasn’t perfect. Solomon wasn’t perfect and I actually gave the president a little one-pager on those Old Testament kings about a month ago and I shared it with him. I said, ‘Mr. President, I know there are people that say you said you were the chosen one and I said, ‘You were.’ “

This comes as Perry has been linked to the impeachment investigation. The Dallas Morning News writes:

The House impeachment inquiry has kicked up questions regarding Perry’s role in Ukraine policy and in Trump’s efforts to coerce that country’s leadership to deliver damaging evidence against Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

The energy secretary’s involvement with Ukraine was natural given the strategic importance of Ukraine’s energy sector and the pressure Russia has put on that country by repeatedly cutting off or hiking prices for natural gas.

But State Department officials with direct responsibility for Ukraine have testified that Perry was part of a troika that seemed to have hijacked relations with Ukraine.

Perry has refused to comply with a congressional subpoena. Sunday is expected to be his last day on the job.
