Just when you think think he can’t go any lower, Donald Trump sets a new bar for crassness. At a “Merry Christmas” rally Wednesday night in Michigan, Trump implied the late Democratic Congressman John Dingell, was looking up from hell.

The remark came in one of many stories in a rambling campaign speech in Battle Creek, Michigan that was laced with bitterness and anger.

Trump’s speech coincided with the House vote on two articles of impeachment. One of those voting for the measures was Dingell’s widow, Debbie, who has filled her late husband’s Congressional seat.

CNN writes:

Trump said that he gave the family the “A-plus treatment” after John Dingell died, and that the congresswoman, who now holds his seat in the House, told Trump during an emotional call following John Dingell’s funeral that her husband would have been “thrilled” by the respect shown for him during his funeral and “he’s looking down” on the ceremonies.

“Maybe he’s looking up,” Trump said, drawing some moans and groans from those in Battle Creek, Michigan, about two hours away from Debbie Dingell’s district. “Maybe, but let’s assume he’s looking down.”

It’s not clear what Trump meant by the “A+ treatment.” Dingell’s funeral was private, he didn’t lie in state in the capitol, but even if he had, that’s an honor bestowed by Congress, not the White House. Trump ordered flags lowered which is customary when dignitaries die.

Trump’s remarks have drawn negative reactions from other Republicans too. The Week reports that GOP congressman Paul Mitchell, who represents Michigan’s 10th district, called on the president to apologize for his inappropriate jab. “It’s unacceptable to use [Dingell’s] name in such a dishonorable manner,” Mitchell declared. Rep Fred Upton, R-Mich., and even Lindsey Graham agreed that Trump should apologize.
