Despite a tweet from Donald Trump saying he wouldn’t allow a Navy to remove a SEAL from his unit, the White House has let it be known the disciplinary hearing can go forward. From NPR:

Although President Donald Trump had tweeted on Thursday that he would not let the Navy remove Chief Petty Officer Edward Gallagher from the SEALs, the Navy was given White House guidance on Friday that it can proceed as planned, the Navy official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters.

The change comes after the secretary of the Navy and the admiral in charge of the SEALS threatened to resign if Trump intervened in the case.

Gallagher was acquitted of murder in the death of an Islamic State captive but was convicted of posing with a corpse in Iraq in 2017, according to Axios.

Meanwhile, CNN writes “There is extreme concern over decision making being pulled from the Navy,” one administration official told CNN Saturday in reaction to Trump’s Thursday tweet that “the Navy will NOT be taking away Warfighter and Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher’s Trident Pin.”
