In an early morning tweet, Donald Trump wrote of toughening background checks for the purchase of firearms together with immigration reform. But when the president made his remarks to the nation on Monday morning, gone was any reference to background checks.

Instead, Trump, reading off a teleprompter, scattered the blame for the two massacres over the weekend. He blamed video games and said mental health laws need to be changed. New gun laws? Not so much. Personal responsibility? Nope.

• Trump did not acknowledge any of his own incendiary rhetoric during his remarks, nor did he reference his tweet earlier this morning that cast blame upon the news media for creating an environment where mass shootings can occur.
