The American business community made it clear on Monday that it wants to move on from the election, despite the distraction of President Trump’s continued, seemingly hopeless effort to overturn the results.

In a letter to Congress, nearly 200 top business leaders, including “an array of executives of Fortune 500 companies,” urged lawmakers “to certify the electoral results for President-elect Joe Biden,” reports the Washington Post.

Also on Monday, the usually conservative U.S. Chamber of Commerce denounced a long-shot push by some Congressional Republicans to obstruct Biden’s win, The Hill reported.

Efforts by some members of Congress to disregard certified election results in an effort to change the election outcome or to try a make a long-term political point undermines our democracy and the rule of law and will only result in further division,” the Chamber said.

At least a dozen GOP senators and 100 representatives say they’ll object on Wednesday, Jan. 6, when a joint session of Congress meets to count the votes of the Electoral College. Such objections would mean lengthy delays in a process that is normally completed in less than half an hour.

The business leaders’ letter rejects that approach, favoring stability and progress over belligerence.

The presidential election has been decided and it is time for the country to move forward,” the letter said, noting that the Biden administration “faces the urgent tasks of defeating Covid-19 and restoring the livelihoods of millions of Americans who have lost jobs and businesses during the pandemic.”

Signers of the letter included “leaders of banks, airlines, investment firms, pharmaceutical companies, professional sports leagues, real estate conglomerates, top law firms and media companies,” the Post says.
