President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris hosted an event at the White House Friday for Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, who was confirmed to the Supreme Court in a 53-47 bipartisan Senate vote the day before.

“It has taken 232 years and 115 prior appointment for a Black woman to be selected to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States but we made it. We made it. All of us. All of us,” Jackson told a crowd of her family, friends, and supporters assembled on the White House lawn.

“We have come a long way toward protecting our Union. In my family, it took just one generation to go from segregation to the Supreme Court of the United States,” Jackson said.

“Our children are telling me that they see now more than ever that here in America, anything is possible,” she added, noting that many young people sent her encouraging notes during her confirmation process that “speak directly to the hope and promise of America.”

Jackson thanked dozens of people who helped her on her journey to the Supreme Court, including classmates, colleagues, lawmakers, and her family.

“The path was cleared for me so I could rise to the occasion,” she said before quoting poet Maya Angelou: “I am the dream and the hope of the slave.”

Jackson said “I have dedicated my career to public service, because I love this country, and our Constitution, and the rights that make us free.”

Before introducing Jackson, Biden highlighted the historic nature of her confirmation, calling it “a moment of real change in American history.”

“This is going to let so much sun shine on so many young women, so many young Black women,” Biden said.

Harris echoed that sentiment in earlier remarks, saying “The young leaders of our nation will learn from the experience, the judgment, the wisdom that you, Judge Jackson, will apply in every case that comes before you. And they will see for the first time four women sitting on that court at one time.”

Biden touted his record of elevating Black jurists. “We needed a court that looks like America—not just the Supreme Court,” Biden said. “That’s why I’m proud to say…I’ve nominated more Black women judges to the federal appeals court than all previous presidents combined.”

Jackson is expected to join the Supreme Court in late June or early July, when Justice Stephen Breyer retires.
