The White House Bureau Chief for The Washington Post summed up the state of the Trump presidency at the height of yet another crisis with this missive on Twitter:

Trump and advisers calculated that he shouldn’t speak to the nation because he had nothing to say, no tangible policy or action to announce, nor did he feel an urgent motivation to try to bring people together. So he let his tweets speak for themselves.

And those tweets? One blames the press for fomenting hatred and anarchy. One is about designating ANTIFA a terrorist organization. None are about understanding or listening or sympathy.
